Payments: payment acceptance settings
In the “Payments” tab of “Settings” you stop sales, replace Stripe keys or disconnect it, find the charge log and see in advance what happens to subscriptions.
Before you start
- Only the project owner and admin see the “Payments” tab. It has two subtabs: “Connections” — the Stripe row and how you take payments, “Rules and money” — subscription rules and the charge log.
- Only the project owner changes the Stripe row and how you take payments.
- Stripe is already connected — how to do it is on the Pricing and payments page.
What to choose
| If you want to… | Do this | What happens to existing subscriptions |
|---|---|---|
| stop selling for a while | switch off payment acceptance | renew as usual |
| replace the keys of the same Stripe account | “Reconnect” | renew as usual |
| remove an extra key set, live or test | “Detach” | subscriptions in that environment — as you choose in the dialog |
| move to another Stripe account | disconnect Stripe, then connect the new one as the first time — Pricing and payments | as you choose in the dialog |
| stop working with Stripe | disconnect Stripe | as you choose in the dialog |
| take money on your side and build quizzes in Subster | choose “On your own” | renew as usual |
Switch off payment acceptance
In the Stripe row, click the “Accepting payments” toggle — the label changes to “Payments are off”. Keys and settings stay in place.
- New purchases stop: a customer who clicks pay sees “Payments are temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.”
- Existing subscriptions renew, and charges your developer's server makes on saved cards go through as usual.
The same toggle switches acceptance back on. Reconnecting the keys also switches it on again.
To remove the funnel itself rather than payment alone, unpublish it — Publish a funnel.
Replace the keys
Click “Key management” in the Stripe row, then “Reconnect” in the “Live keys” or “Test keys (sandbox)” row. The form opens empty: enter the new pair and click “Connect”.
Keys of the same account — say, after rotating the secret key in the Stripe dashboard — change with no effect on customers.
“Reconnect” does not work for moving to another account. We would then not cancel the old account's subscriptions: charges in the old Stripe continue, and their renewals and cancellations no longer reach the cabinet. First disconnect Stripe and choose what happens to subscriptions, then connect the new account.
Detach one key set
With both live and test keys connected, the extra set is removed separately: “Key management” → “Detach” in its row. The dialog shows how many active subscriptions this environment has and asks what to do with them — same options as when disconnecting Stripe.
The other set and its customers are untouched. One-time purchases in this environment stay with customers, and prices of this environment drop out of the selection. If the set is the only one, detaching equals disconnecting Stripe completely.
Disconnect Stripe
Switch off the toggle to the left of the word Stripe — the “Disconnect Stripe?” dialog opens. If you take payments on your side (the “On your own” mode, described below), the “Disconnect the payment provider” link opens the same dialog.
The dialog removes both key sets and shows how many subscriptions are affected. The “Detach” button works once you choose what to do with subscriptions:
| Option | Charges | Subscriber access |
|---|---|---|
| “Cancel the subscriptions now” | stop | ends at once; the paid remainder is not refunded |
| “Cancel at the end of the paid period” | stop | lasts until the end of the paid period |
| “Leave them, I will sort it out in Stripe” | continue until you cancel the subscriptions in the Stripe dashboard | ends at once |
What happens with any option:
- access from one-time purchases is revoked, and the money for them is not refunded;
- prices and products are not deleted, but you cannot select them, and the funnel cannot be paid either;
- connect the same account again — prices come back and payment works; with another account you have to pick the prices in the blocks again.
The “Leave them, I will sort it out in Stripe” choice and the number of subscriptions left are recorded in the project “Audit”, “Project team” tab.
Change how you take payments
The “How you take payments” choice at the top of the “Connections” subtab can be changed at any time.
- “On your own” — you keep prices and customers on your side, and in Subster you build quizzes and collect data. The cabinet hides the “Store” and other money sections, and “Funnels” become “Quizzes”. Stripe stays connected and existing subscriptions keep charging — to stop them too, disconnect Stripe.
- “Through us” — the money sections come back with everything you set up: prices, subscriptions and customers never went away.
Charge log
Open the “Rules and money” subtab and expand “Charge log” in the “Customer money” group. It holds only extra charges your app takes from a customer's saved card without a paywall — for example, for moving to yearly access.
Your developer sets up such charges — Money from the app; if they did not, the log is empty. Look for payments made on the paywall in the “Store” — Store: subscribers and money.
- “Export” prepares a spreadsheet file (CSV) with every row under the current filter above the log, beyond the open page. The file builds in the background: save it when “Download the file” appears. The default filter is the last 30 days; for full history choose “All time”.
- “Refund” in a row with the “Charged” status returns the full amount of that extra charge to the customer — there is no partial refund. The subscription stays: only the access days the extra charge gave are removed, and renewals continue. We do not notify the customer about the refund. Only the project owner has the button.
What payment settings do not have
The cabinet has no taxes, receipts, project currency or choice of payment methods: the customer pays by card, and you set the currency — USD, EUR or GBP — on each price. Only Stripe connects for now: Paddle and other systems below the Stripe row on the “Connections” subtab are shown for the future. Payment for Subster itself is in the “Balance & plan” section, see Plan and limits.
